**Short answer:** The easiest way to pair a Cardo Packtalk is with the Cardo Connect app: pair the unit with your phone over Bluetooth, then use the app to create a DMC mesh group or join a friend's group. Riders with other Packtalk models join the same mesh group. Riders with a different brand, such as Sena, connect through Bluetooth intercom pairing instead, because Cardo's DMC mesh only works between Cardo units.

A new Cardo Packtalk can do three different kinds of pairing, and people often mix them up: pairing to your phone for music, navigation and calls; grouping with other Cardo riders over DMC mesh; and Bluetooth intercom pairing with a rider on another brand. This page walks through each one for the current Packtalk models, including the Edge, Pro and Neo. Button sequences differ slightly between models and firmware versions, so we focus on the app method, which works the same across the range, and point out where to check your manual. If you have not mounted the unit yet, see [how to install a Cardo Packtalk](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/how-to-install-cardo-packtalk) first.

## Before you start

Charge the unit fully, update the firmware, and install the Cardo Connect app on your phone. Many pairing problems come from old firmware, especially when riders in a group are on different versions. Our guide on [how to update a Cardo Packtalk](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/how-to-update-cardo-packtalk) covers the update process.

Turn off Bluetooth on any other devices nearby that were previously paired with the unit, such as a second phone or a GPS, so they do not grab the connection while you are setting up.

- Fully charged Packtalk unit
- Latest firmware installed
- Cardo Connect app on your phone
- Phone Bluetooth on, other old pairings turned off

## Pair your Packtalk with your phone

Phone pairing is ordinary Bluetooth. The unit needs to be in pairing mode, then you select it from your phone's Bluetooth list. On current Packtalk models you can start pairing from the unit's buttons or by voice command, and the exact button press is listed in the manual for your model. The Cardo Connect app then recognizes the unit and gives you access to settings.

Once paired, the unit should reconnect automatically each time you turn it on with your phone's Bluetooth enabled. You can pair a second device, such as a GPS, to the second phone channel if your model supports it.

1. Turn the Packtalk on.
2. Put the unit into phone pairing mode using the button sequence or voice command in your model's manual. The LED will flash to show pairing mode.
3. Open your phone's Bluetooth settings and select the Packtalk from the list.
4. Accept any prompts to share contacts or allow notifications if you want caller names announced.
5. Open the Cardo Connect app, which should detect the unit, and check settings such as audio profile and volume.

## Create or join a DMC mesh group

DMC (Dynamic Mesh Communication) is Cardo's mesh intercom. Riders in the same group connect to each other automatically and stay connected as they change positions. Cardo lists the Packtalk Neo as connecting up to 15 riders in a group. Grouping is simplest in the Cardo Connect app, where one rider creates a group and the others join.

Do the grouping while everyone is standing together with their units on. Once a group is set, it is saved, and the units reconnect to the same group on the next ride. If you want to understand why mesh groups stay connected, see [how mesh intercoms work](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/how-mesh-intercoms-work).

1. Make sure every rider has their Packtalk on and in range, ideally within a few feet of each other.
2. One rider opens Cardo Connect and starts a new DMC group.
3. The other riders join the group from their app, or use the grouping option on the unit as described in the manual.
4. Wait for each unit to confirm it has joined, then test by talking.
5. Ride a short loop to confirm everyone is heard before setting off on a longer trip.

Note: Set up intercom groups before you ride. Do not use the app or work through pairing menus while the bike is moving.

## Bridge to Sena and other brands

Cardo's DMC mesh and Sena's Mesh Intercom are different systems and do not connect to each other directly. To talk to a rider on another brand, use Bluetooth intercom pairing, which links your Packtalk to one other headset over standard Bluetooth. Cardo calls this universal or Bluetooth intercom pairing in its manuals.

In a typical setup, the Cardo rider pairs one Bluetooth intercom link with the Sena rider, while staying in the DMC group with the other Cardo riders. Cardo's manuals describe a bridge feature that can bring a Bluetooth-paired rider into conversation with the group; check what your model and firmware support. See [Sena vs Cardo](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/sena-vs-cardo) for more on mixing brands.

1. Put your Packtalk into Bluetooth intercom pairing mode as described in your model's manual.
2. Put the other headset into its phone pairing or intercom pairing mode, as its manual describes.
3. Wait for the two units to confirm the link.
4. Test by talking, then check the link reconnects after both units are turned off and on.

## Which Packtalk model you have

The pairing steps above apply across the current range, but the hardware differs. The Packtalk Pro adds crash detection, auto on/off and 45 mm JBL speakers, and uses Cardo's magnetic Air Mount. The Packtalk Edge also uses the Air Mount and supports Natural Voice commands such as 'Hey Cardo'. The Packtalk Neo uses second-generation DMC with 40 mm JBL speakers and is listed for up to 15 riders at up to about 1 mile between riders.

## If pairing does not work

Most pairing failures have simple causes: one unit on older firmware, an old pairing on the phone confusing the connection, or a unit not fully in pairing mode. Delete the Packtalk from your phone's Bluetooth list, restart both, and try again. If it still fails, a factory reset clears all pairings; the reset method is in your model's manual.
