**Short answer:** Newer Cardo Packtalk units, such as the Edge, Neo and Pro, update over the air through the Cardo Connect app on your phone. Charge the unit, pair it with the app, and accept the update when it appears. Older units like the Packtalk Bold, Black and Slim usually update with Cardo's desktop updater over a USB cable. If an update stalls, charge fully, keep the phone close, restart both devices and try again, or use the desktop updater.

Cardo releases firmware updates to fix bugs, improve mesh and Bluetooth connections, and sometimes add features. Keeping your Packtalk current also helps when you ride with friends, since mismatched firmware can cause pairing trouble. This page covers which update method your unit uses, step by step instructions for the app and the desktop updater, how to update a pair of units, and what to do when an update fails or stalls.

## Which update method your Packtalk uses

Cardo has two update paths. Recent models update over the air through the **Cardo Connect** app on iOS and Android. Older models update through Cardo's desktop updater for Windows and Mac, connected by USB. If you are not sure which you have, open the Cardo Connect app and pair the unit. If the app offers an update, use it. If it does not, check Cardo's support site for your model.

| Model | Usual method |
| --- | --- |
| Packtalk Edge | Cardo Connect app, over the air |
| Packtalk Neo | Cardo Connect app, over the air |
| Packtalk Pro | Cardo Connect app, over the air |
| Packtalk Bold, Black, Slim | Cardo desktop updater over USB |

Typical update path by model (check Cardo's site for your unit)

## Update through the Cardo Connect app

Before you start, charge the unit fully, or at least well above half. Make sure your phone has a solid internet connection and enough battery. Do the update indoors, off the bike, where you will not need the unit for a while.

Keep the phone within a few feet of the Packtalk during the whole update and do not use other Bluetooth audio at the same time. Updates can take several minutes. Do not turn the unit off or close the app while the progress bar is running.

1. Charge the Packtalk unit.
2. Install or update the Cardo Connect app on your phone.
3. Pair the unit with the phone if it is not already paired. See [how to pair a Cardo Packtalk](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/how-to-pair-cardo-packtalk).
4. Open the app and select your unit. If an update is available, the app will show it.
5. Tap to start the update and keep the phone close until it finishes.
6. When the unit restarts, check the firmware version in the app.

## Update with the desktop updater

For older units, download Cardo's desktop updater from the official Cardo website, install it on your computer, and connect the Packtalk with a USB data cable. Some charging-only cables do not carry data, so if the computer does not detect the unit, try another cable.

The updater detects the model and offers the latest firmware. Follow the prompts and do not unplug the cable until it says the update is complete. Some users also use the desktop updater as a fallback for newer units when the app update keeps failing.

1. Download the Cardo desktop updater from Cardo's official site.
2. Install it and create or sign in to a Cardo account if asked.
3. Connect the Packtalk with a USB data cable.
4. Let the updater detect the unit and start the update.
5. Wait for the completion message before unplugging.

## When an update stalls or fails

Most failed updates come from low battery, a weak Bluetooth link, or interference from other devices. Start with the simple fixes before anything else.

If a unit stops responding after a failed update, connect it to a charger for a while, then try the desktop updater. Cardo's support pages list reset steps for each model, and the button combinations vary, so follow the guide for your unit. If nothing works, contact Cardo support. For other issues, our [Cardo Packtalk problems](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/cardo-packtalk-problems) guide covers common fixes.

- Charge the unit fully and try again.
- Keep the phone next to the unit and turn off other Bluetooth devices nearby.
- Restart the phone and the Packtalk.
- Update the Cardo Connect app itself.
- Try the desktop updater over USB with a data cable.
- Do a factory reset following Cardo's guide for your model, then update.

Note: A factory reset clears pairings. You will need to pair your phone and riding group again afterward.

## Updating a group and after the update

If you ride in a mesh group, update every unit to current firmware before a trip. Mismatched versions can cause dropped connections or pairing trouble. Update one unit at a time from each owner's phone, then re-pair the group if needed. Our guide to [how mesh intercoms work](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/how-mesh-intercoms-work) explains group setup.

After the update, test phone audio, music, intercom and voice commands before riding. If you are thinking about a newer unit, our [best Cardo Packtalk intercoms](https://lidandvisor.com/best/best-cardo-packtalk-intercoms) guide compares the current models.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I know if my Packtalk needs an update?** Open the Cardo Connect app with the unit paired. It shows the current version and offers an update when one is available.

**Can I update Packtalk without a computer?** Newer units such as the Edge, Neo and Pro update over the air through the app. Older units usually need the desktop updater.

**Will updating erase my settings?** Normally no. A factory reset does clear pairings and settings, so only reset if an update fails.

**Why does my Packtalk update keep failing?** Low battery, weak Bluetooth connection and interference are the usual causes. Charge fully, keep the phone close, and try the desktop updater.
