**Short answer:** The Schuberth C5 lists its weight (about 3.9 lb in sizes XS to L), a ratchet strap, a visor memory function, adjustable liner thickness and a 5 year warranty, and costs less than the Neotec 3. The Shoei Neotec 3 lists a QSV-2 drop-down sun visor, a CNS-3C Pinlock shield and a compact wind tunnel shell. Pick the C5 for known weight and value; pick the Neotec 3 if Shoei fit suits you.

The Shoei Neotec 3 and the Schuberth C5 are the two modular helmets most touring riders shortlist first. Both flip up, both are DOT certified, and both aim at long days on the highway. This page lines them up on weight, chin bar and visor, ventilation, comfort, comms and price. We also include the C5 Carbon for riders who want the lightest version. All specs come from the product listings, and we flag the points the listings leave out so you know what to confirm before buying.

Listing facts for the Shoei Neotec 3, Schuberth C5 and C5 Carbon

## Weight and shell

Weight is where the listings differ most. Schuberth publishes figures: the fiberglass and basalt C5 comes in at about 3.9 lb (1780 to 1790 g) in sizes XS to L and about 4.2 lb in XL to 3XL, using two outer shell size groups. The C5 Carbon drops to about 3.5 lb in XS to L. Shoei's Neotec 3 listing does not give a weight, so if a few ounces matter to you, check Shoei's own spec sheet before you compare.

Shoei uses its AIM shell with a multi-density EPS liner. Schuberth uses Direct Fiber Processing fiberglass with basalt on the standard C5 and a full carbon shell built by a single technician on the C5 Carbon. Both approaches aim for strength at low weight. For more on what these materials mean, see [helmet shell materials](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/motorcycle-helmet-shell-materials) and [motorcycle helmet weight](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/motorcycle-helmet-weight).

## Chin bar, visor and sun shield

Both helmets flip up so you can talk, drink or pay for fuel without taking the helmet off. The Neotec 3 listing describes a flip-up face cover and shield for moving between full face and open face use. The Schuberth listing adds a visor memory function: the shield goes back to the position you set after you open and close the chin bar, which is handy at toll booths.

For sun, the Neotec 3 lists the QSV-2 drop-down sun visor, described as large and easy to adjust, plus a CNS-3C shield with a Pinlock insert to fight fog. The C5 listings here do not mention a sun visor or a Pinlock insert, so confirm both on the product page if they matter to you. Fogging advice for either helmet is in our [visor fogging fix](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/motorcycle-helmet-visor-fogging).

## Ventilation, comfort and fit

The C5 uses a double chin intake with a washable, replaceable filter and exhaust channels through a rear spoiler. The Neotec 3 lists multiple intake and extraction points and a wind tunnel shell aimed at lower noise and drag.

Comfort is where Schuberth lists more detail. The C5 has seamless linings with adjustable padding thickness at the sides, back and cheeks (cheek pads in sizes M, L and XL), and a micro-lock ratchet strap that is quick to use with gloves. The Neotec 3 listing does not cover strap type or liner adjustment. In practice, head shape decides which helmet is comfortable for you, so try both. ## Built-in comms

Riders often ask which modular handles an intercom better. Of the three listings, only the C5 Carbon mentions comms, stating it is prewired for the SC2 system. The standard C5 and the Neotec 3 listings do not say anything about comms prep. Shoei sells the Sena SRL3 as a dedicated unit for Shoei helmets, but its listing does not name which models it fits, so check Shoei or Sena compatibility charts for the Neotec 3 before buying.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is the Schuberth C5 lighter than the Shoei Neotec 3?** Schuberth lists the C5 at about 3.9 lb in sizes XS to L. The Neotec 3 listing gives no weight, so a direct comparison needs Shoei's spec sheet.

**Does the Schuberth C5 have a sun visor?** The C5 listings used here do not mention one. Check the product page or Schuberth's site before buying if a drop-down shade matters to you.

**Are both helmets DOT approved?** Yes. All three listings state DOT FMVSS 218. See our [DOT vs ECE vs Snell guide](https://lidandvisor.com/blog/dot-vs-ece-vs-snell) for what that covers.

**Which is better for touring?** Both are built for it. The C5 offers more listed comfort adjustments and a longer listed warranty; the Neotec 3 offers a listed sun visor and Pinlock shield. Fit should break the tie.
