Shoei Neotec 2 vs Neotec 3: what changed

Published

This page is for riders who own a Neotec 2, or are weighing a discounted leftover against the current Neotec 3. We set out what the Neotec 3 listing actually confirms, which commonly discussed upgrades the listing does not confirm, and how to decide whether replacing a Neotec 2 makes sense. Because there is no current Neotec 2 listing among our product sources, we do not quote Neotec 2 specs. Instead we tell you what to check on your own helmet's label and manual.

What the Neotec 3 listing confirms

That is the full set of facts we can stand behind for the Neotec 3. It is a solid touring modular feature list, and it matches what most riders expect from Shoei's top flip-up.

  • Shell: AIM (Advanced Integrated Matrix) with a multi-density EPS liner.
  • Rating: DOT FMVSS 218.
  • Flip-up face cover and face shield for switching between full face and open face use.
  • QSV-2 internal sun shield, adjustable with one hand.
  • CNS-3C shield with Pinlock for fog resistance.
  • Multiple intake and exhaust vents.
  • Wind tunnel shaping to reduce drag, lift and wind noise.
  • Listing price: $949.99, and $1,049.99 for the Breeze graphic.

What is not confirmed in the listings

Riders often ask about three changes between generations: ECE 22.06 approval, a new shield, and fit with the Sena SRL3 intercom. Here is where each stands based on our sources.

ECE 22.06. The US Neotec 3 listing states DOT FMVSS 218 only. It does not state ECE 22.06. Helmets sold in Europe carry ECE labels, but whether a given US unit carries one is not confirmed here. Check the chin strap label on the helmet itself. Our ECE 22.06 explainer covers what that standard adds.

Shield. The Neotec 3 uses the CNS-3C shield. The Neotec 2 shield model is not in our listings, so we cannot confirm interchangeability. Assume shields do not swap between generations unless Shoei's parts list says they do.

SRL3. The Sena SRL3 listing says it is made for Shoei helmets but does not list models. The Shoei GT-Air 3 listing explicitly names the SRL3. For the Neotec 3, confirm with Sena's or Shoei's compatibility list before ordering.

Note.Do not mix intercom units, shields or sun visors between helmet generations based on looks. Use the part numbers in the manual.

Side by side

Values for the Neotec 2 are left as not confirmed because there is no current listing in our sources.

Should you upgrade from a Neotec 2?

Upgrade decisions are mostly about the helmet you already have, not the new one. Replace your Neotec 2 if it has been in a crash or dropped hard onto a hard surface, if the liner has packed down so the helmet moves on your head, or if it is old enough that the manufacturer's replacement guidance applies. Our pages on when to replace a motorcycle helmet and what to do with a helmet after a crash go through the signs.

If your Neotec 2 is in good shape, still fits snugly and you are happy with your intercom setup, the listing does not show a change large enough to justify replacing a sound helmet on features alone. If you want a factory intercom option, check the SRL3 compatibility first, since that may be the deciding factor.

  1. 1

Check the production date label inside your Neotec 2 and look for crash damage.

  2. 2

Do the fit test: with the strap done up, the helmet should not roll forward or twist on your head.

  3. 3

Decide if you want an integrated intercom, and confirm which Sena unit fits which Neotec.

  4. 4

Try the Neotec 3 in your size before buying; padding changes between generations can change fit.

Alternatives worth a look

If you are shopping modulars anyway, the Schuberth C5 lists at $799 with a stated weight of about 3.9 lb in sizes XS to L, a visor memory function and a ratchet strap. See Shoei vs Schuberth for that comparison. HJC's RPHA 91 lists at $559.99 with a carbon and carbon-glass shell. Our best modular motorcycle helmets guide lines these up, and best Shoei helmets covers the rest of the Shoei range.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Neotec 3 ECE 22.06 certified? The US listing states DOT FMVSS 218 only. ECE status is not confirmed by the listing, so check the label on the helmet you buy.

Does the Neotec 2 shield fit the Neotec 3? It is not confirmed. The Neotec 3 uses the CNS-3C shield; check Shoei's parts list before buying a shield for either helmet.

Does the Sena SRL3 fit the Neotec 3? The SRL3 listing says it is for Shoei helmets without naming models. Confirm on Sena's compatibility list.

Is a used Neotec 2 a good buy? Only if you know its history. A helmet that has taken a hit may look fine and still have a compressed liner, so a used helmet with unknown history is a gamble.
