Helmet brands and models

Shoei, Arai, Bell, HJC, AGV, Scorpion and Schuberth each sell several lines at different prices, and fit differs between brands and even between models. Compare a model's shell sizes, shape, labels and weight, not the brand name alone.

Most brands build a lineup that runs from an entry model in a polycarbonate shell to a top model in fiberglass composite or carbon. Higher models often add more shell sizes, so the outer shell is closer to the size of your head, plus better vents, more comfort liner options and a visor with an anti-fog insert included.

Fit is the part a spec sheet cannot settle. Two medium helmets from different brands can feel very different because each maker shapes the inside for a target head shape. Some makers sell the same model with different cheek pad thicknesses so you can fine tune the fit.

Check what each model carries: DOT is required for US street use, and many recent models also list ECE 22.06 or Snell M2020D. Intercom makers such as Sena also sell helmets with communication built in.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming your size in one brand is your size in another.
  • Comparing helmet weights without checking that both are the same size.
  • Buying last year's model without checking whether its labels have since been updated.
