Shoei GT-Air 3 vs RF-1400: pick by riding style

Published

The GT-Air 3 and RF-1400 are both premium Shoei full face helmets, but they are built for different riders. The GT-Air line is Shoei's touring full face; the RF line is its sport-street flagship. This page compares them on shell, rating, shield, comfort, comms and price using only what the listings say, and points out the features riders expect that a listing does not confirm. Start with our helmet types guide if you are still choosing between full face and modular.

GT-Air 3 vs RF-1400 specs

Listing facts only. Prices are as listed at the time of writing. 'Not listed' means the listing does not say.

Riding style decides this one

If most of your miles are long highway days, upright on a touring or adventure bike, the GT-Air 3 is the helmet aimed at you. Its listing talks about a smooth, quiet ride for touring riders, a fog-free Pinlock shield in all weather, and integration with a dedicated intercom. Those are the details that matter over a full day.

If you ride a sport or naked bike and lean forward, the RF-1400 makes more sense. Shoei says wind tunnel work gave it 4% less drag and 6% less lift than the RF-1200, and less lift helps when you check over your shoulder at speed. It is the simpler helmet, and for many riders simpler is the point.

Shield, sun visor and fog

The GT-Air 3 ships with a CNS-1C shield and a Pinlock lens in the box, which handles fog in cold and wet weather. The RF-1400 uses the CWR-F2 shield; its listing does not say whether a Pinlock insert is included, so check before you buy. Our Pinlock install guide and visor fogging fixes apply to both.

Many riders choose the GT-Air line for an internal drop-down sun shade. The GT-Air 3 listing we have does not describe one, so confirm the sun shield on the product page if that is your reason for buying. Neither listing mentions one for the RF-1400, so plan on a tinted shield or photochromic visor for bright days with that helmet.

Note.Tinted and dark smoke shields are for daytime use only. Swap to clear before dusk.

Comfort, safety and comms

The GT-Air 3 lists more comfort and safety detail: a 3D center pad and cheek pads in several thicknesses for tuning fit, intake and exhaust vents with an insect filter, and the Emergency Quick Release System (E.Q.R.S.), which Shoei includes to help with helmet removal in an emergency.

For comms, the GT-Air 3 is designed for the Sena SRL3, a unit made for Shoei helmets with Harman Kardon speakers, mesh intercom and Bluetooth 5. That gives a cleaner install than a clamp-on unit. The RF-1400 listing does not mention comms prep, so plan on a clamp or adhesive mount; see how to install a Cardo Packtalk for what that involves.

On safety labels, the RF-1400 is the one that lists Snell M2020 in addition to DOT. The GT-Air 3 lists DOT. Both meet the US legal requirement for street use. See DOT vs ECE vs Snell.

Price and value

At listed prices, the GT-Air 3 costs about $230 more than the RF-1400. You pay for the touring kit: Pinlock in the box, fit adjustment pads, E.Q.R.S. and SRL3 integration. If you would use those features every ride, the GT-Air 3 is good value. If you would not, the RF-1400 gives you Shoei's flagship shell and a Snell rating for less. Fit first, though: try both and use our Shoei size chart.

  • Touring, commuting in all weather, want an intercom built in: GT-Air 3.
  • Sport or naked bike, want Snell on the label and a lower price: RF-1400.
  • Want a flip-up chin bar instead: see Neotec 3 vs Schuberth C5.

Frequently asked questions

Does the GT-Air 3 have a sun visor? The GT-Air line is known for an internal sun shade, but the listing we use does not describe it. Check the product page to confirm before buying.

Is the RF-1400 quieter than the GT-Air 3? Both listings say the shells were wind tunnel shaped to cut noise. Real noise depends on your bike and windscreen, so wear earplugs on long rides with either.

Can I fit the Sena SRL3 to the RF-1400? The SRL3 listing says it is for Shoei helmets but does not name models, and the GT-Air 3 listing is the one that names it. Check Sena's compatibility list for the RF-1400.

Which is safer? Both carry DOT. The RF-1400 also lists Snell M2020. A correct fit matters as much as the label, so size carefully.
